Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR)

ILR or settlement gives you the right to live and work in the UK for as long as you like without any time restrictions. Not every type of visa leads to ILR, and the ILR is also a long and time-consuming application.

You can in general settle via:

• The Investment route
• The Family route
• The worker route
• The Ancestry route
• The Long Residence route

General requirements for settlement:

• Have resided in the UK for the prerequisite qualifying time period (3 years, 5 years or 10 years depending on the route)
• Have a good knowledge of the English Language
• Pass the Life in the UK Test
• Show that you have continuously been staying in the UK for the required amount of time
• Prove that your absences did not exceed more than 180 days in a 12-month period.

Note that the once your ILR has been approved, you can look to apply for citizenship and the British passport.
